Newsflash: Trinity application could herald significant changes to NSW workers compensation scheme
Trinity Insurance (Trinity) has submitted an application to the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) seeking approval to expand its industry coverage beyond its current focus on employers connected to the Catholic Church.
The proposed expansion would include employers in the health and human services sector which would be a significant shift in Trinity’s role within the workers’ compensation landscape. At present, Trinity’s licence is limited to managing workers’ insurance claims for employers whose primary business activities are tied to the Roman Catholic Church and its religious institutions.
As outlined in the application, Trinity proposes to exclude “Religious Institutions” (WIC 961000) from its defined industry and expand its coverage to encompass a wider array of sectors. These new sectors would include preschools, primary and secondary schools, hospitals, psychiatric facilities, nursing homes, and various aged care and non-residential care services. If granted, this potential expansion could have a significant impact on the NSW workers’ compensation scheme as it currently stands, and could see other insurers and claims service providers also submit similar applications in the future.
SIRA is currently reviewing the application and is yet to make a formal decision. Bellrock will continue to report developments on this matter to our clients and partners.
